Hmm, That’s an Interesting Way to Think About It
Event: Street RootsInterviewer: Janie
Whom did you interview?
On Saturday, I talked with a variety of Street Roots Vendors, but the person I spent the most time with was Makavalie. Makavalie is currently housed and is selling papers still. As we were talking, I pointed out that I like his outfit. He then told me that he made it! I found out that he has his own clothing line. After I left, I did some more research on the Street Roots website and found that one of the main reasons behind his clothing line is to provide clothes to people who need it.
How did your EcoTypes and SDG priorities compare? As we went through the EcoTypes survey, we found that we actually had a lot in common. We were both fairly people oriented (him a bit more than me), and that we both believed in big institutional change. I think I was more invested in the nature part of the environment than he was, and he was more invested in the people side of things.
What larger MCJD lessons did you learn?I found that we didn’t necessarily disagree a lot. All of the opinions he had were very valid understandable when explained, it’s just that we have different emotions and experiences that affect which ones we care the most about, and feel the urge to act on. I think no one could do a better job of creating a clothing line that is accessible to unhoused people than Makavalie could, and some things I would be “better” for as well. I think following really what you’re passionate about not only helps you but greatly benefits others as well.
